Newport Arch, Lincoln

Lincoln City Council recognised the significance of the arch as an ancient monument and symbol of the city, as well as the urgent need to repair and maintain its fabric.

The works included a stone-by-stone survey to identify the scope of repairs together with close liaison with the masons and English Heritage to ensure the maximum retention of the historic fabric. Repairs were undertaken using stone from the Cathedral quarry and hydraulic lime mortar. The tooling to the ashlars was determined for each phase of construction so that it could be replicated by the masons.
